Studies on the Excreta of a Grasshopper (melanoplus

چکیده
THE methods hitherto employed in the study of the gross metabolism of insects have been based mainly on the changes in their content of physiologically important substances during development, and on the ability of the organism to grow on selected diets of known composition. There is a third method, extensively employed by mammalian physiologists, namely analysis of excreta; this, as Uvarov (1928) has pointed out, necessarily involves its correlation with the constitution of the food. Very few analyses of insect excreta, however, have been made, and those of any completeness are confined to species of unusually specialized food habits, i.e. the clothes moth (Babcock, 1912), (Hollande & Cordebard, 1926), and Rhodniusprolixus (Wigglesworth, 1931). The insect selected for this study was the grasshopper, Melanoplus bivittatus Say, an unspecialized phytophagous type, morphologically rather primitive; the diet used throughout the experiment consisted of head lettuce alone, with distilled water ad lib. 5000 individuals were raised from egg to adult on this diet, their excreta being frequently collected, freed of fragments of food and exuviae, and placed in a calcium chloride desiccator; about 30 g. were thus obtained. Unless otherwise indicated, standard methods of analysis, such as are used in clinical investigations, were employed (Peters & Van Slyke, 1932).

Infection of Melanoplus sanguinipes grasshoppers following ingestion of rangeland plant species harboring vesicular stomatitis virus.
Knowledge of the many mechanisms of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) transmission is critical for understanding of the epidemiology of sporadic disease outbreaks in the western United States. Migratory grasshoppers [Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fabricius)] have been implicated as reservoirs and mechanical vectors of VSV. The grasshopper-cattle-grasshopper transmission cycle is based on the assumptio...

Host-plant preferences were assessed by Þeldmeasurement of grasshopper abundance in relation to measurements of ßoral community and by laboratory host-plant preferences. Correlations between grasshoppers and plants (biomass and percentage cover) were based on data gathered at 29 study sites in Þve distinct Florida habitats (including disturbed, freshwater marsh, high pine, oak hammock, and swam...
متن کاملAn Ecosystem Perspective on Grasshopper Control : Possible Advantages to No Treatment
It has been hypothesized that some herbivores may increase the cycling of nutrients in ecosystems, thereby increasing plant production even after herbivore consumption is considered. Such herbivory could maintain the productivity of ecosystems and should not be curtailed. This contrasts with the traditional view whereby herbivory always reduces plant production. Two grasshoppers (Melanoplus san...

Grasshopper species belonging to subfamilies Melanoplinae, Gomphocerinae and Oedipodinae were tested for their feeding rate on three types of grass. All grasshopper species were offered Shawnee and Kanlow cultivars of switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L. and big bluestem, Andropogon gerardii Vitman. The grasshoppers, Melanoplus femurrubrum and Melanoplus differentialis were also tested for their fe...
